Saber Interactive Vows No Generative AI in Space Marine 3
After a wave of criticism over ChatGPT use on another production, Saber Interactive's creative director has publicly pledged that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 will be made without generative artificial intelligence.

Saber Interactive, the studio behind the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine series, has had to publicly distance itself from accusations of replacing human workers with artificial intelligence. On September 4, the studio's creative director Tim Willits declared that the third installment of the series will not contain a shred of generative AI.
The Spark
The controversy began with a much smaller and cheaper studio production, Rideshare Simulator. In August, Stella Sacco, the title's former lead writer, publicly wrote that she had been replaced by ChatGPT during development, and that passenger voice lines in the rideshare simulator were AI-generated rather than recorded with voice actors. Sacco left the project in 2023, but her post only gained wide traction now, as the Warhammer community started wondering whether similar practices could reach the studio's flagship series.
CEO's Failed Defense
Instead of calming the situation, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch made it worse with his response. Karch denied that writers were being mass-replaced by AI, but admitted the studio uses AI tools for certain game elements. He also claimed Sacco had left the project "for various reasons" before it launched.
Honestly, in hindsight I'd have gladly replaced her with artificial intelligence. At least we'd be dealing with something programmed to be honest - Matthew Karch, CEO of Saber Interactive
Rather than putting the dispute to rest, the remark carried it beyond the small circle of Rideshare Simulator fans and into the wider Warhammer 40,000 community. Players began asking en masse whether Space Marine 3, one of the studio's most anticipated games, would be made the same way.
Warhammer Fans React
A Reddit post suggesting that "Space Marine 3 is already doomed" gathered about 2,800 upvotes, an exceptionally high result for that community. Other users commented that the studio's PR department now had its hands full trying to put out the fire started by the CEO's comments. The pressure grew significant enough that the studio's creative director, not just its press representatives, had to address the matter directly.
A No-Generative-AI Pledge
Willits, who serves as creative director, stated outright that generative AI will not be used in any of the studio's flagship productions. Games Workshop, the owner of the Warhammer brand, has long emphasized that it values human-driven creative work, so the reputational threat to its licensee was real.
There is absolutely no generative artificial intelligence in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3, just as there isn't in Hellraiser, Stuntman, Turok, Jurassic Park, or the John Wick games - Tim Willits, Creative Director of Saber Interactive
At the same time, Willits did not rule out further experiments with the technology, but stressed that testing would remain confined to smaller, cheaper titles like Rideshare Simulator, where the studio wants to gauge whether players accept AI-generated content at all.
Wider Industry Context
The Saber Interactive dispute fits into a growing string of similar controversies in the games industry, where studios have had to publicly account for using, or being suspected of using, generative AI in productions built on recognizable brands. Developers of major licensed titles know that fan communities treat human creative labor as a line that costs reputation to cross.
The topic carries extra weight for the Polish games market, since domestic studios increasingly work on commission for foreign publishers or on licensed brands, where the same community expectations could surface just as quickly. The episode also shows that the line between acceptable and unacceptable AI use in games isn't drawn by a studio's budget, but by how deeply a given brand is tied to fans' expectations of creative authenticity.
