Google, BlackRock, Ford and Carhartt Form Alliance to Train Welders and Electricians
Four major companies, including Google, have launched the Alliance for America's Skilled Trades, a mass training program for welders, electricians and mechanics needed to build the energy infrastructure and AI data centers of the future.
Google, BlackRock, Ford and Carhartt announced on July 21, 2026 the launch of the Alliance for America's Skilled Trades, a national coalition aimed at training welders, electricians, plumbers and mechanics at scale. The announcement comes as Silicon Valley is rocked by software engineer layoffs, with tech companies openly admitting they lack the hands needed to build the physical infrastructure without which artificial intelligence cannot function.
What the companies announced
The alliance was formed at the initiative of four companies that, at first glance, have little in common: tech giant Google, investment firm BlackRock, automaker Ford, and workwear maker Carhartt. What unites them is a single problem: a shortage of workers to build infrastructure, from power lines to factories and data centers.
The coalition isn't creating a new joint fund, but rather linking and scaling up investments that individual members were already making separately. Three of the four founding companies have pledged a combined roughly $450 million toward training programs and apprenticeship pathways across 30 states. Carhartt contributes through its For the Love of Labor program, which has supported more than 60 nonprofit organizations focused on trade training since 2022.
Why now
The announcement coincides with a wave of layoffs at tech companies. Microsoft cut its workforce by 2 percent, and Oracle eliminated 20,000 positions, largely among software developers whose tasks are increasingly being taken over by coding agents. At the same time, those same tech giants are building data centers, transmission networks and power plants on a scale the American labor market hasn't seen in decades, work that requires physically present people with specific manual skills.
Compounding this is a demographic factor: the baby boomer generation is retiring en masse, taking decades of trade experience with it, while younger generations are increasingly choosing four-year degrees over vocational schools. This trend is widening the labor gap just as demand for these skills is surging.

The Moravec paradox
The story behind the alliance illustrates what's known as Moravec's paradox: AI models excel at analytical tasks and generating text or code, but they still cannot replace human manual dexterity, spatial reasoning and the practical judgment needed to, say, diagnose a damaged cable behind a wall or weld a steel structure under nonstandard conditions. It is precisely these skills, the ones that cannot be automated, that are now becoming scarce.
Jim Farley, President and CEO of Ford, and Linda Hubbard, President and CEO of Carhartt, joined Ogunlesi and Porat in signing a joint op-ed published in Fortune magazine, in which they described the shortage of skilled tradespeople as "a national crisis, but also a generational opportunity."
What it means for the labor market
The alliance is focused on three areas: building a stronger pipeline of talent into the skilled trades, scaling proven, evidence-based training programs, including apprenticeship systems, and inviting additional partners, including labor unions, industry associations and educational institutions. The coalition also plans to publish a national report on workforce gaps by industry.
