German-Swiss Duo to Showcase AI Damage Assessment in Minutes at Automechanika

Germany's ACB and Switzerland's Betag Innovation will present AI-based systems at Automechanika 2026 in Frankfurt that generate a car damage repair estimate in minutes from photos or a bodywork scan.

Assessing collision damage, a process that today can take an appraiser or repair shop several days, is set to take just minutes. At the Automechanika 2026 trade fair in Frankfurt, two companies from Germany and Switzerland will present AI-based systems that automatically detect bodywork damage and immediately generate a ready-made repair cost estimate.

What the exhibitors will show

The system from German company ACB relies on photographs. A repair shop employee takes pictures of the damaged vehicle using an app, and an image-analysis algorithm identifies dents, cracks and other damage on its own, then prepares the documentation and cost estimate. The entire process, from taking the photos to a finished report, is meant to take just a few minutes instead of the days or even weeks typically needed to wait for an appraiser under traditional assessment.

Swiss company Betag Innovation goes a step further, offering a dedicated device instead of just photos. The Damage Assessing System is a mobile wheeled frame fitted with up to two digital cameras and a floodlight system, which the operator guides by hand around the parked car. Special extension arms also allow it to scan horizontal surfaces, such as the roof or hood. The solution is meant to sit, in both price and functionality, between expensive gantry-style scanners and simple smartphone or tablet apps.

How the scanning works

According to Betag Innovation founder and owner Ralph Meichtry, the device requires a relatively even surface and about a meter of clear space around the vehicle for the scanner to move. After circling the car, the software automatically detects damage, including hail dents, documents it digitally and generates a complete repair calculation within minutes. The equipment folds up and is portable, which is meant to make it attractive not only to stationary repair shops but also to independent appraisers working in the field.

The company also announced a second product, the Betag Performance Index, a concept designed to support the analysis and streamlining of repair processes in workshops. It is meant to evaluate individual repair stages, identify bottlenecks and establish measurable performance indicators for bodywork and paint jobs.

A market after two bankruptcies

ACB and Betag Innovation are entering the automatic damage assessment market at a time when competition in the segment is shrinking. The TÜV Rheinland group has halted development of its Adomea scanner, and Swiss company Twinner, which offered similar gantry-style bodywork scanning systems, filed for bankruptcy two years earlier. Betag Innovation is therefore betting on a cheaper, more mobile solution than stationary scanning gantries, which require a dedicated room and heavy capital investment.

At the Frankfurt fair, the company will run training sessions together with Bosch, Car-O-Liner, DEKRA and DAT covering AI-assisted repair cost calculation, damage documentation and electronic 3D measurement of body geometry. The presence of such major partners suggests that automated damage assessment has a chance of becoming standard equipment at larger repair shop chains rather than remaining a niche gadget.

Why it matters for claims handling

Faster, more precise damage assessment matters above all for the claims handling chain: the repair shop, the insurer and the vehicle owner. Automated reports cut down on manual data re-entry, reduce the risk of missed damage and shorten how long customers wait for a decision on the scope of repairs. It is precisely this stage, between filing a claim and the insurer approving the cost estimate, that today tends to be the longest link in the whole process.

In the Polish market, where large numbers of bodywork and paint shops and insurance companies rely on external appraisers, tools like these may arrive later than in Germany and Switzerland, but the direction matches what Polish insurers are already testing in their own photo-based claims apps. Wider adoption of mobile scanners like Betag's, however, will depend on the price of the hardware, which has not yet been disclosed.

Both solutions are set to debut at the September Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 trade fair, the largest international trade fair for automotive parts, repair and service. It is there that makers of workshop equipment and insurance platforms typically showcase which technologies stand a chance of reaching mass production in the years ahead.
